The brief.
Starting point
A narrow run between the house and a timber retaining wall, mostly bare soil with patchy grass.
What the customer wanted
TBC Confirm the customer’s objective with Luke, e.g. a tidy, usable passage that stays green without upkeep.
Site constraints
Tight access for tools and materials, with the house wall, downpipes and the retaining wall to finish neatly against.
Stage by stage
How it
was built.
What was done at each stage, and why it matters to the finished surface.
-
Before Existing site
Bare soil and patchy grass along a narrow run. Before anything is dug, we look at how the space is used, where water goes and how tools and materials will get in.
- Why it matters
- Planning around access and drainage up front avoids surprises once the ground is open.
-
Excavation & set-out Excavation & set-out
The old surface was dug out and the area set out with string lines and a straight edge, so the finished levels are established before any base goes down.
- Why it matters
- String lines set consistent falls and heights. Turf follows whatever is underneath, so this is where a flat finish starts.
- Included in this job
- Excavation and removal confirm disposal
-
Compacted base Base construction
A base was spread, screeded to the set-out levels and compacted firm, finishing flush with the paths and edges either side.
- Why it matters
- A firm, even base stops the surface sinking or developing hollows, and lets water drain through rather than sit.

-
Fitted & trimmed Turf fitting
Turf was laid with the pile running one way, then cut and trimmed tight to the walls, fence line and existing edges.
- Why it matters
- Consistent pile direction keeps the colour even, and clean cuts at every edge are what make the job look finished.

Preparation
Finished
Finished & handed over
A final groom brought the pile up, and the passage was cleaned off and checked along every edge before handover.

- Care
- An occasional brush and a blow or rake to clear leaves is all a space like this needs.
